Mountains, Virgin Forests, Rivers, Lagoons & History Northeast Greece & Landscpaes of Thrace – 2023

“Active tours bringing you Greece’s rich past and present”

This was a pioneering visit which Tour Greece Naturally was proud to have organised. Northeast Greece comprises the 2 provinces of East Macedonia and Thrace. An area largely off the beaten track but nevertheless has a great deal to offer the visitor in terms of nature, stunning landscapes, and history. The protected Rhodope Mountain range is a place of sinuous streams, impressive waterfalls and beautiful forests and is one of the few remaining virgin forests in Europe with a rare ecosystem.

In Xanthi the mix of cultures, races and religions that come together create a unique combination of people. We experienced the glamour and elegance to the Old Town with its cobblestone streets and grand mansions.

The Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest National Park is one of the most important protected areas on a national, European, and international level. It is one of the first areas in Greece to be declared as protected since the flora and fauna species found in the Balkan Peninsula, Europe and Asia coexist here. The National Park hosts three out of the four Vulture species of Europe. Despite the catastrophic forest fires prior to our visit we were fortunate to view the vultures who insist in staying in the area whose presence will be crucial in the recovery of the National Park

In Kavala, we walked though the old town to the fortress. The city, tucked away in north-eastern Greece, is a coastal port city and is all about unexpected blends of history and culture, architectural landmarks and flower-filled courtyards.

Philippi, (360 BCE) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient city of Philippi is connected to many exceptional historical figures and events that shaped the Western world. Stunning monuments, which have survived until today, are evidence of its long history.

The last days of you trip was spent on the island of  Thassos  known for its lush, green landscape and its beaches but it also has a rich history. The gold mines attracted the Phoenicians, who colonized the island. Marble was quarried here was used at Ephesus and in Rome.
