Myths, forests and endless shores of the Aegean Sea – Mount Olympus and Olympias

Wonderful memories of all who joined this tour. We viewed Mt Olympus, the mountain of mythology towering over the remains of ancient Dion, and ended at Olympias a coastal village in Chalkidiki under the shadow of ancient Stageira.

On Mount Olympus the twelve gods live in ravines, “the mysterious folds of Olympus” according to Homer. The summit Pantheon (today’s Mytikas) is their meeting place. Their tempestuous discussions are heard by the god of gods Zeus sitting on his imposing throne (today’s Stefani). From there he unleashes his thunderbolts displaying “his godly wrath”. Today a national park that is famous for its endemic plants, forested slopes, waterfalls and the many trails that traverse this stunning mountain.

Olympias is a modern fishing village situated in a beautiful bay. The ancient city of Stageira, birthplace of Aristotle, is within walking distance. A string of amazing beaches along the coastline was an opportunity for excellent bathing. The cruise to view the impressive monasteries of Mt Athos from the boat was a highlight.
